SubtleBodyBigDance
Gina Bolles Sorensen | 11:45am - 1:15pm | Intermediate | Light Box Theater
Service Description
SubtleBodyBigDance is a contemporary dance technique class where imagery meets improvisation and develops into dynamic choreography. In the first half of the class, dancers are guided through an imagery and sensation-based improvisation practice. Then, imagery and sensation are put into context in a set movement phrase. In the phrase, dancers strive to find a unison of feeling or intention, not necessarily a unison of shape. Dancers will discover new freedom and textures in their movement as well as an invigorated sense of play. Gina Bolles Sorensen (MFA, E-RYT) is one part dance educator, one part choreographer, and one part yogini. She and her husband, Kyle Sorensen, are the Co-Artistic Directors of a contemporary modern dance platform called somebodies dance theater and the creators of a dance practice called SubtleBodyBigDance, which weaves imagery, improvisation, and choreography into one playful and serious dance discovery experience. They have presented live performance works and dance films to critical acclaim around the country and world. Gina has danced for companies and choreographers in New York, San Francisco, Oregon, and San Diego. She received grants to study the classical Indian dance Bharatanatyam in Bangalore, India, and spent seven months working intensively in the Gaga language in Tel Aviv, Israel. Gina has twice published original research in the Journal of Dance Education on the subject of imagery as a dance teaching methodology. She was the recipient of a National Artist Teacher Fellowship from the Center for Arts in Education at the Boston Arts Academy, a panelist at the Women in Dance Leadership Conference in Philadelphia, and received a Distinguished Alumna Award from the University of Oregon. At Grossmont College, Gina serves as Chair of the Dance Department, teaches Modern Dance and Choreography, and co-directs the Dance Department concerts and Grossmont College Dance Company. At Southwestern College, Gina teaches Ballet and Dance History. She is also an Experienced-Registered Yoga Teacher, and founder of Yoga Natyam, an online resource for yoga classes. One of Gina's favorite creative pursuits is being mama in the Sorensen family.
