Service Description

Skeleton, Fleshed Out* is a practice where set choreography is the “skeleton”, improvisational scores are the “flesh”, and the dancer layers, oscillates between, and plays with both to create dances in real-time. On a good day, it's a gentle yet rigorous framework for the practice and development of a dance that allows the threshold between choreography and improvisation to align our body, mind, and spirit if we let it. We’ll begin by tuning our solo and collective bodymind, and getting our breath, blood, and brains flowing through procedural and poetic prompts, increasing the number of choices we have as dancers and human beings. Awake and available, we will warm up our witnessing by watching each other, sharing our observations, and trying on each other’s dancing. Next, we will “set” some solo choreography to create a skeleton, then flesh it out, first on our own, and then with others. If you have any trouble or fear around learning set sequences of movement OR dancing without choreography, this workshop will help you loosen your grip on and expand your experience of both! *This work is inspired by Nina Martin’s Continuum of Deliberation, which places “set” material on one end of a continuum and spontaneously created dances on the other, allowing us to “choreograph [our] improvisations and improvise [our] choreography”.
