Tribute to José Limón

Celeste Lanuza Dance Theatre presents a bi-national cast of eight dancers from local San Diego dancers and Tijuana, Mexico. Camino al Alma: Journey to the Soul, is an original choreography by Celeste Lanuza, which reveals the importance of courage and tenacity to overcome life’s trials. This work is inspired by choreographer José Limón and his struggle with poverty and racism as a young Mexican immigrant in Southern California. The company performs to original music co composed by Ms. Lanuza and Fred Lanuza. This work was conceptualized during her graduate work at UCI in Dance Choreography and later performed in festivals now sharing with Live Arts. The choreographic piece fuses spoken word, Mexican Folkloric and Spanish Flamenco dance rhythms interwoven with modern dance. Enjoying choreographing and teaching abroad working with dancers from Asia, Mexico, and now back in The United States she is excited to bring dance theater to San Diego.

The evening closes with SD School of Creative & Performing Arts dance majors in suite from Psalm based on Limón's Etude, theme of man rising out of annihilation, reconstructed by Carla Maxwell and rehearsed by Francisco Ruvalcaba followed by a section of Limón's film documentary.
