Artistic Director Jean Isaacs has announced that the company will resume live performance outdoors, as the COVID-19 spacial restrictions have been adapted for outside events. San Diego Dance Theater plans to move programming outside to more easily comply with COVID-19 restrictions and social distancing guidelines but still bring live dance to our audiences. The newly-constructed temporary stage situated in the North Promenade of the ARTS DISTRICT Liberty Station can host sixty audience members for each of three performances of new dances by Associate Artistic Director Terry Wilson and world premiere solo for dancer Lauren Christie by invited guest choreographer Khamla Somphanh. This fall performance takes the place of our annual January repertory show, typically held at Saville Theatre at San Diego City College.
In addition and with the help of rehearsal director Liv Isaacs-Nollet, Jean Isaacs will reprise her oh so popular “Cabaret Dances” from 2010 with music by Kurt Weill and Bertoldt Breich as sung by German vocalist Ute Lemper. “Cabaret Dances” captures the baudy decades between WWI and WWII in Europe when Nazism was on the rise and bold humor, cross dressing, and farce dominated the dance and music scene.
The world premiere by Wilson has been created for the full company of San Diego Dance Theater dancers, including Brianna Bellamy, Lauren Christie, Marcos Duran, Nicolas Gilbertson, Jessica Gilmore, Cecily Holcombe, Mario Jaimes, and Minaqua McPherson. Untitled for the moment, Wilson will choreograph a series of vignettes inspired by poetry by Maria Pasantanaponlons, Pablo Neruda, and Rumi. This work will celebrate the power of spoken word and movement, accompanied by a sound collage of music by composer Armand Amar.
Guest choreographer Khamla Somphanh will debut a solo work inspired by the haunting, hidden story of bombs dropped in the tiny country of Laos. In our history, Laos is the most bombed nation ever recorded and active bombs are still scattered throughout the country.
Since this performance is outside, it can offer seating and perspective from three angles. SDDT encourages attendees to participate in the “picnic atmosphere” by purchasing a basket from local restaurants at Liberty Station who are participating in this event: THE LOT Restaurant, Solare Ristorante, or Banyan Kitchen + Cafe- or, by bringing their own! Call ahead to reserve your picnic basket or customize it.
